Adele makes an emotional tribute to those killed in Orlando
Adele paid tribute to the
victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting in a moving speech made during a gig
on Sunday night.
The superstar
singer, who was performing in Belgium, received supportive claps and cheers
from the audience as she spoke out about the tragedy, which took place only 24
hours earlier.
“I’d like to start
tonight by dedicating this entire show to everybody in Orlando, and at Pulse
nightclub last night,” she said.
“The LGBTQI
[Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning and Intersex]
community – they’re like my soulmates,
since I was really young, so I’m really moved by it,” she added, before
succumbing to tears on stage.
TV star James Corden
also remembered the victims of the shooting on Sunday night, in his opening
speech at the 2016 Tony Awards.
“All around the
world people are trying to come to terms with the horrific events that took
place in Orlando this morning," he said. "On behalf of the whole
theater community and every person in this room, our hearts go out to all of
those affected by this atrocity."
Adele hit the
headlines last week after David Bowie's producer David Visconti made a series
of disparaging remarks, suggesting that the singer might have had a little help
with her famous vocals.
“You turn the radio
on and it’s fluff, you are listening to 90% computerised voices,” he told The
Daily Star. “We know Adele has a great voice but it’s even questionable if that
is actually her voice or how much has been manipulated. We don’t know.”
Adele responded in
characteristically forthright fashion,
“Some d---head tried
to say that my voice was not me on record … Dude, suck my d---,” she was
recorded saying during a recent performance in Paris.
Today, Visconti
apologised – sort of – for his comments.
"I’m sorry that what I said in regards to
what’s being played on radio was misconstrued yet I cannot apologize for
something taken the wrong way. If Adele has taken my comments as offensive that
was certainly not my intent," he said in a statement to Billboard. "Adele
has a great voice and it brings pleasure to millions."
On her appearance:
"I like having my hair and face done, but I'm not going to
lose weight because someone tells me to. I make music to be a musician not to
be on the cover of Playboy."
On dieting:
"I don't want to eat a Caesar salad with no dressing; why
would I do that? I ain't got time for this, just be happy and don't be
stupid."
On friendships:
"I have insecurities of course, but I don't hang out with
anyone who points them out to me."
On self-respect:
"If a man whistles at you, don't respond. You are a lady,
not a dog."
On high taxes:
"When I got my tax bill in from [the album] 19, I was ready
to go and buy a gun and randomly open fire.”
On ex-boyfriends' identities:
"Who cares? Nobody famous, just old boyfriends. I don’t
date celebrities. I ain’t f*****g Taylor Swift, d'youknowwhatimean?"
