Osun monarchs support calls for Nigeria’s restructuring

A traditional ruler in Osun State, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has backed the restructuring of Nigeria, saying it is the solution to the numerous problems caused by the present structure.
The monarch, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Monday, said the present arrangement encouraged laziness and lack of innovation in some states.
Akanbi said restructuring the nation would enhance innovative thinking.
He said, “Restructuring will make states to be proactive and develop at their own pace. We will have states having autonomous powers and they will be able to survive on their own.
“You know Canada, Manitoba, and other states have their own laws and are able to develop them.
“We need such in Nigeria. There are mineral deposits in all the states and the states will have to be self-reliant.
“The restructuring will solve the problem of Niger Delta militancy and many more.
“The Federal Government will still be there and will be in charge of some sectors like defence and foreign affairs, but some issues would be left for states to handle and it will be more effective.”
Another prominent monarch, the Orangun of Oke Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolurin, also supported the call for the restructuring of Nigeria.
Abolurin, who spoke with our correspondent in a separate interview, said  although he was in support of restructuring, there were other fundamental things  which must be done.
He said, “Restructuring cannot be done overnight. It is always a process. We need quality leadership, transparent and honest people.
“There will always be gaps in our constitution, but our duty is to fill the gaps. True federalism will take a while.”
