Meanwhile, since the inconclusive governorship election that was conducted in the state on December 5, the two main contenders in the poll, Governor Dickson of the PDP and Timipre Sylva of the APC have been engaged in a war of words.
Sylva had at several times alleged that his major contender, Dickson is responsible for the violence and criminality that had plagued the state before and after the gubernatorial race.
In a recent statement issued by Nathan Egba, director of media and publicity, Sylva-Igiri Governorship Campaign Organisation, alleged that the governor shunned security matters and hunted assumed political enemies.
“The APC is worried at the increasing rate of violent crime, including kidnappings across the state, which is believed to be a direct result of the total abandonment of governance by the Dickson-led administration in favour of politics,” Egba said.
He further hinted that the state’s APC was also nervous about the desperation of Dickson and his party in winning the rerun election. He cautioned them and called on security agencies to embark on more intelligence gathering and arrest those planning chaos before the rerun polls.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cancelled the election in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state following irregularities and violence that marred the exercise in the area. The commission is expected to conducted a rerun poll on January 9, in the council area which is said to have the highest number of voters in the state.
But, ahead of the January 9 supplementary election in the state, the Governor Dickson has asked the INEC to declare him the winner of the December 5 poll.
In a related development, professor Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stated that the commission will not alter the quality of elections in order to record a conclusive result.
