Nigeria Politics : Sack Of PDP NASS Members: Dakuku Reacts
Dakuku Peterside, the governorship candidate of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers state, has reacted to the sack of the Rivers Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the National Assembly.
He said truth had prevailed, applauding the verdict of the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, This Day reports.
In a unanimous judgment delivered by a panel of three justices, the election of the National Assembly members of the Rivers PDP was nullified.
Speaking shortly after the announcement, Dakuku described the court’s verdict as victory for the people of the state and those who voted during the March and April general elections.
He said: “I know that everybody in Rivers State, including our opponents in the last general elections, expected these sweeping judgments because we were all witnesses to the widespread violence and irregularities that marred the various elections.
“As a party, and law-abiding citizens, we are happy that at last, light has overshadowed darkness, and this in itself is encouraging. Although the journey has been winding and most painful but we have remained steadfast knowing full well that at all times, truth will always take the limelight over lies and evil, no matter how hard human beings try. Therefore these landmark judgements are vindicating and heartening.”
According to him, the court ruling was an indication that this was a new Nigeria that will not allow a few stifle the voices and collective decision of the majority.
He advised the PDP to come to terms with the new reality which intensely abhors electoral violence and fraud, adding that no society can move forward in an atmosphere of violence, ignorance, intolerance, intimidation and all other vices.
“As a people, we must strive to remain civil and accommodating of other views no matter our position for that is the only way to support the growth and sustenance of democracy and liberty,” the APC governorship candidate said.
Dakuku therefore, called on the people of the state to support the APC in the upcoming re-run elections across the state saying, “We cannot afford to support candidates who are evidently lacking in capacity and in all the necessary tools needed in modern day governance.”
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on December 10, sacked Senator George Thompson Sekibo representing Rivers East Senatorial District in the National Assembly since 1999, ordering a re-run election.
Hon. Blessing Nsiegbe representing Port Harcourt Constituency 2 in the Federal House of Representatives under PDP ticket was also sacked
