Star Wars: The Force Awakens' blasts U.S. box office record with $57 million
LOS ANGELES — Disney has a good feeling about this.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens put up $57 million in Thursday night showings in the U.S. alone, streaking past the previous record of $43.5 million set in 2011 by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, according to studio figures.
Playing in 4,134 theaters — a December record — the film seems to have a very good chance of passing the domestic weekend record of $208.8 million, set earlier this year by Jurassic World.
The Force Awakens also made $5.7 million on 391 IMAX screens, smashing the previous Thursday-night-previews record of $3 million.
