‘Buhari’s actions fuelling militancy in N/Delta’ - Ijaw Youth Council
THE Ijaw Youth Council, the umbrella body for Ijaw youths worldwide, has asked Nigerians to hold President Muhammadu Buhari responsible for the renewed militancy in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
IYC said most steps taken by the Buhari administration were geared towards antagonising and undermining the interest of the Niger Delta region including the removal of the 10 per cent community development equity share from the Petroleum Industry Bill.
This was contained in a communiqué issued by the group’s President and spokesman, UdengsEradiri and Eric Omare respectively, at the end of activities marking this year’s celebration of the late Major Adaka Boro with the theme: The Ideals of Isaac Boro and the Renewed Militancy in the Niger Delta: The Way Forward.
While frowning upon recent bombings of oil facilities in the region, the IYC said the present administration had breached several terms which gave birth to the 2009 Presidential Amnesty Programme for arms struggle in the region.
Such actions of the President Buhari, they said, included the untimely disengagement of youths enlisted in the amnesty programme and the harsh drop in the 2016 budget for the amnesty office.
