Nigeria: Gov, APC chief urge partnership with Russia
The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, and the state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Henry Ajomale, say Nigeria needs to further strengthen its ties with Russia to help revamp its ailing economy.
Ambode and the APC chieftain spoke at the 2016 Alumni Congress of SOYUZNIC Alumni Association of Nigeria – a body of Nigerian graduates trained in the former USSR – pointing out that Russia’s expertise would be useful in Nigeria’s quest to diversify its economy.
Ambode, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Mr. Kehinde Joseph, said, “Bilateral cooperation between Russia and Nigeria has huge potential. Opportunities abound for cooperation in energy, infrastructural projects, metallurgy and mining.
“Nuclear energy is another area with good prospects for cooperation. Several years ago, an agreement on the construction of power plants in Nigeria was signed. This is a long and complex process, which must be preceded by the creation of the prerequisite legal and economic frameworks and training of specialists in the sphere of atomic power.”
Also, the APC chairman stated that the theme of the congress —Harnessing the potential of Nigerian graduates of higher institutions of former USSR states — was unique, adding that it would bring all SOYUZNIC in Nigeria to the forefront of the country’s quest for national development.
He said, “There is a lot of expertise that Russians have. They have expertise in virtually everything in the old Soviet Union and in Russia and if we can tap into it, it will be better for Nigeria.”
