Ogun fire guts nine shops, injures two
No fewer than nine shops were destroyed by a midnight fire opposite the Ifo Police Station in the Abule-Ifo area of Ogun State.
Our correspondents gathered that the fire, which started around 12.20am on Monday, lasted till 3am as firefighters battled to put it out.
It was learnt that the fire was caused by an electrical surge after power was restored to the area at about 12.15am.
The PUNCH learnt while nobody died in the fire, a firefighter and a resident, who was trying to salvage his goods, sustained injuries.
Our correspondents gathered that firefighters came from Ota and Ewekoro stations to put out the fire around 1.30am.
It was gathered that the injured firefighter, one Daunsi, from the Ota Fire Station was rushed to the Ifo General Hospital.
A resident, Sola Olumide, said the fire started from a spark on a pole, which fell on one of the shops, where cooking gas was being sold, leading to explosion, which spread the fire to other shops.
Olumide said, “There is a trader who sells clothes and she just returned with goods from Dubai. All her goods were razed.’’
When one of our correspondents visited the scene, residents and victims lamented their losses.
It was observed that nine shops were affected by the fire.
A victim, Segun Akinjeji, said, “I own a shop where I sell kitchen utensils and gas. I was called about 1am that fire had destroyed my shop. I can’t estimate my total loss because it will take time. I want government to help me.”
Another victim, Godfavour Anao, 35, who sells drinks, said, “I lost everything. I don’t know where to start from. I need help to start again.”
However, the Director of Ogun State Fire Services, Fatai Adefala, said five shops were gutted by the fire.
He said, “Our men were able to put out the fire, but one of our firefighters was injured in the operation. About five shops were gutted by the fire.”
