For the seventh consecutive year, the White House's official chief
photographer, Pete Souza, published his "Year in Review" gallery — what he calls "one of the best and most challenging aspects" of his job.
"Editing photographs, especially for a project like this, is both subjective and personal. I not only found key historic moments from the year, but also chose moments that give people a more personal look at the lives of the President and First Lady," Souza wrote.
Of the 11o photos included in Souza 's roundup, we've selected the 55 best shots.
All captions were written by chief White House photographer Pete Souza.

Jan. 20, 2015: Recently released from prison in Cuba, Alan Gross pumps his fist in the air from First Lady Michelle Obama’s box after President Obama acknowledged him at the State of the Union address at the US Capitol.

Jan. 22, 2015: While we were in Lawrence, Kan., we stopped at the Community Children’s Center–one of the nation’s oldest Head Start providers. The President sat next to Akira Cooper, right, and reacted to something she said to him.

Feb. 23, 2015: The President’s daughter Malia stopped by the Oval Office one afternoon to see her dad and, while they were talking, she wiped something from his face.

Feb. 27, 2015: It’s definitely true that former NBA player Shaquille O’Neal is a big guy. But I’ll admit that I used a wide angle lens and this angle to accentuate his size when he stopped by the Oval Office for a quick visit.

Feb. 27, 2015: Chuck Kennedy captured this scene at dusk as the President entered the Outer Oval Office with Shaun Donovan.

March 7, 2015: I was moving around trying to capture different scenes away from the stage during the event to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday and the Selma to Montgomery civil rights marches. When I glanced back towards the stage, I noticed the President and First Lady holding hands as they listened to the remarks of Rep. John Lewis. I managed to squeeze off a couple of frames before they began to applaud, and the moment was gone.

March 7, 2015: For Presidential trips, I usually have another White House photographer accompany me so he or she can preset with the press and obtain angles that I can’t, as I usually stay close to the President. Lawrence Jackson made this iconic image from the camera truck as the First Family joined others in beginning the walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

March 7, 2015: I tried to line up the First Family as they boarded Air Force One at Maxwell Air Force Base following the events in Selma. If you look closely, you can see that the President is whistling as he follows the First Lady, Marian Robinson, and Malia on the stairs.

March 10, 2015: Although he doesn’t play competitive basketball anymore, basketball is still a big part of his life. He had just given a speech on education and college affordability at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and when we passed through the gym on the way back to the motorcade, he took a few minutes to try and drain some three-point shots.
